A veneer is simply a very thin layer of porcelain covering the visible surface of the teeth. It can replace worn-off enamel, repair small chips, and add strength to the tooth. A veneer can also completely change the appearance of a tooth, with minimal alteration to the underlying structure. During your preliminary consultation, Dr. Jones will explain what to expect, and discuss any potential alternatives. Veneers are a good choice for many patients, because the procedure is very conservative, yet provides dramatic cosmetic improvement. A small amount of enamel may be removed to accommodate the thickness of the restoration. However, the amount is minimal because veneers are only about as thick as a fingernail. Depending on the condition of the tooth, and the nature of the changes to be made, reduction might be unnecessary. When the procedure is complete, your tooth will be protected, because the porcelain will serve as artificial enamel. Once the tooth or teeth have been prepared, Dr. Jones will carefully take impressions and send them to a dental lab, where your veneers are created. We only work with quality facilities, using the finest dental porcelain. Your veneers are crafted according to the doctor’s specifications, including the subtle variations of color and translucency that are necessary for a truly natural appearance. This typically takes two or three weeks; you may be provided with a temporary during that time.
We will schedule the next appointment when your finished veneers arrive from the lab. Dr. Jones will check the fit and appearance before permanently bonding them in place. If adjustments are needed, the doctor may be able to make them here in our office, but he will return the veneers to the lab if necessary. It is important to choose a dentist who is always mindful of health issues, because any restoration (including cosmetic) has the potential to affect your bite. If the veneers are not fitted just right, they may be uncomfortable and they can fail prematurely due to excess stress. If you want a smile that is equally healthy and beautiful, call Social Circle Dental at (770) 464-1900 and schedule a consultation today!

I've been thinking about being able to look into dental veneers, and I think that being able to get some help would be good. I'm glad you talked about how teeth are prepared in a lab, which I think is kind of neat. I'm going to have to look for some good options for dental veneers, and seeing what we can find!

A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain made to fit over the front surface of a tooth, like a false fingernail fits over a nail. It can improve the colour, shape and position of your teeth. Veneers can also be used to close small gaps, when orthodontics (braces) are not suitable. If one tooth is slightly out of position, a veneer can sometimes be fitted to bring it into line with the others.

Thanks for explaining that a veneer can completely change the appearance of a tooth. My teeth are pretty messed up due to never visiting a dentist as a child. I have one tooth that I would like to make appear more normal, so I'll consider veneers.

It's good to know that veneers only require taking off a small amount of your enamel before being placed, like you said. I had no idea that veneers are only about as thick as a fingernail. It seems like these wouldn't feel very bulky then and would feel just like your natural tooth.

When I was younger, I always brushed my teeth with a hard brush and a lot of force because I thought that it would make them cleaner. My teeth have been really sensitive and weak and I read last week that it could be due to brushing too hard. Your information that I could get veneers to replace the worn-off enamel and add strength to my teeth is really helpful; I'll start looking into cosmetic dentists this weekend.

Thanks for helping us learn more about a veneer and that it can take the place of the worn-out enamel or even add strength to the tooth. As I am having a tough time smiling due to my broken teeth, sharing something about the good side of using the veneer makes me want to try that. I'll see a dentist who can help decide which veneer is best for me.

Obviously the biggest benefit to cosmetic dentistry is that it produces results. Patients who just a few years ago may have had to be satisfied with chipped, cracked or broken teeth can now have that fixed. Teeth that have been deeply discolored can be whitened. In fact most types of dental defects can be corrected with cosmetic dentistry. Cosmetic dentistry can even reduce signs of aging and leave the patient with a more vibrant and youthful appearance. It can also repair dental damage caused by trauma, illness, infection, developmental abnormalities, or heredity.
